Change Email Forwarding from UW Google to UW O365

Overview

The information on this page is for Shared UW NetIDs that have UW Google email (Gmail) but need to switch to using UW O365. Any Shared UW NetID that has not already changed the mail forwarding from UW Google to something else will automatically have the mail forwarding set to the Owner’s UW email address (personal-netid@uw.edu). The result of this change is that all emails sent to the Shared UW NetID email address will be delivered to the Owner’s UW email address starting August 29, 2023.

Change email forwarding from UW Google to UW O365

If you choose to use UW O365 Exchange Online for email, be aware that this service requires you to log into UW O365 with the Shared UW NetID to ensure it is active.

Verify UW O365 service is active

Follow the steps below to log into UW O365 to verify that the service is active and ready for the email forwarding change: 

  1. In a browser, go to UW Office 365. 
  2. Sign into the service using the Shared UW NetID credentials.
    1. If an error occurs, stop and skip to the instructions for Unable to log into UW O365.
  3. Choose Outlook from the left-hand navigation bar. 
  4. Confirm you can see the Inbox. 

Change the email forwarding from UW Google to UW O365

At this point you can then change the email forwarding to UW O365 by doing the following: 

  1. In a browser, go to the Manage UW NetID Resources tool. 
  2. In the left-hand menu, select the UW Email Forwarding link. 
  3. Switch to the Shared UW NetID you want to change by selecting it from the list in the middle right-hand corner and choosing Go. 
  4. Once the page reloads, click the radial option next to Forward to UW Office 365 and select OK at the bottom. 

Now that the email forwarding is set to UW O365, any email sent to the email address for the Shared UW NetID will be received using Exchange Online. Please see the Exchange Online IT Connect page for more information on accessing UW O365 email.

Unable to log into UW O365

If you cannot log into UW Office 365 with the Shared UW NetID credentials, you must reset the Shared UW NetID(s) password to enable UW Office 365:

  1. Use the Identity.UW tool to reset the Shared UW NetID password. 
  2. Wait 24 hours for the updates to complete across the system. 
  3. Restart the steps above beginning with Change email forwarding from UW Google to UW O365.
  4. Notify any other people (or systems) using this Shared UW NetID that the credentials have changed.
