Avaya Workplace (formerly known as Avaya Softphone and Avaya IX Workplace) is a software application that runs on your workstation and can augment your desktop phone or replace it completely. The software application is a great way to take your phone with you as you travel around campus.

To use Avaya Workplace from an off-campus location, you need to:
- Install the Avaya Workplace software on a computer at your location. This can be a UW supplied laptop or a personal computer or laptop.
- Install and run Husky OnNet to connect to the UW network.
- Have sufficient bandwidth on your internet connection. The recommended bandwidth for Avaya Workplace is 2 Mbps or higher, with a ping latency of less than 100 ms.
- You can determine your bandwidth and latency with UW Speedtest.
- Connect audio input and output devices to your computer, such as a headset or headphones.

No. Sound will not work over a Remote Desktop connection. To use Avaya Workplace from home, install it on your home computer or laptop instead.
Verify that you have administrative privileges on your computer. If you are installing Avaya Workplace on a UW-managed computer and do not have administrative privileges, work with your desktop support group or Nebula to install applications.
To log in to Avaya Workplace, you need a password different from your voicemail password. UW-IT can help you with that. Please contact UW-IT at 206-221-5000 or help@uw.edu with the subject line “Avaya Workplace password help“.
- Confirm your network connectivity. If you are using wired internet, make sure the cable is plugged in. If you are using Wi-Fi, make sure your are in range and connected.
- If you are off-campus, make sure you have installed and connected to Husky OnNet.
- If applicable, verify with your network administrator that a firewall is not blocking your network and connection.

Typically this means you are not connected to the UW network. If you are off-campus, you will need to install and connect to Husky OnNet VPN before using Avaya Workplace.
Type names or numbers to dial into the “name or number” input box. Typing letters searches your contacts.
Next to the “name or number” input box is the dial pad button. It can be used for in-call dialing, though the numeric keypad works great too.
No. All your calls through Avaya Workplace are routed the same way as on your desk phone.
Poor audio can have multiple causes. These factors may contribute to bad call quality:
- Poor Wi-Fi signal
- Not using a headset
- Bad audio cable, such as headset cord
- Running too many applications on your computer
- Slow internet speeds
- You can determine your bandwidth and latency with UW Speedtest.
- The recommended bandwidth for Avaya Workplace is 2 Mbps or higher, with a ping latency of less than 100 ms.
First, verify that the speakers are not muted and that the volume is turned up. Secondly, if using a headset, enable the option to ring on a secondary device in Avaya Workplace. Set the secondary device to your computer speakers.
UW-IT recommends that you use Avaya Workplace with a wired headset to ensure the best sound quality. We have tested a couple of models for compatibility with the application under both Windows and macOS:
- Jabra UC Voice 550 (available in mono or stereo)
- Sennheiser SC 30 USB ML headset
However, for customers looking for a wireless option, we recommend they visit Jabra or Poly.
