UW-IT collaborates with partners across the University to enhance security, and support productivity and innovation.

Software delivery automation

An efficient cloud-based system implemented for several apps, including MyUW, automates software delivery and operational processes, improving performance and creating cost savings.

New basic ticketing

A simplified and lower-cost ticketing tool for handling customer support requests in UW Connect became available for UW departments and units, and further leverages the centrally managed platform.

Vendor risk management

CISO’s IT Vendor Risk Management team, in collaboration with institutional partners, implemented solutions to ensure vendors honor the UW’s policy goals for accessibility, Internet of Things and Payment Card Industry processes.

Expansion of 2FA on the web

To better protect University systems and data from compromised passwords, UW-IT partnered with UW leadership to expand the use of two-factor authentication. Now, students, faculty and staff can better secure access to resources that require signing in with a UW NetID and password on the web.

Colocation facility updates

A major infrastructure upgrade in the Westin Building Exchange colocation facility finishes in 2021, with updates to the DC power plant and battery backup now complete. The facility houses network connectivity for the UW, Pacific Northwest Gigapop and the Washington state K-20 Education Network.

TechConnect successes

UW TechConnect Conference and Tech Talks went virtual in 2020 to support IT professional development. The conference set a record for attendance and featured the UW’s president, IT leaders from across the University, IT service teams and more.

Wi-Fi improvements

Updates to Wi-Fi included expansion of outdoor coverage, including Stevens Way; replacing access points with the latest Wi-Fi technology on the Seattle campus; and enhancing security for eduroam, the UW’s preferred and encrypted connection service for Wi-Fi.

Timely security information

To address potential risks in working remotely, the Office of the Chief Information Security Officer provided the UW community with information on how to protect institutional and personal data from phishing and other scams connected to COVID-19 via email, on its website and also by adapting its online training.

Enhanced Wi-Fi for UW Medicine

Engineering design and implementation work is underway to enhance Wi-Fi network coverage at three UW medical centers. New and upgraded hardware and robust Wi-Fi better support UW Medicine’s use of advanced patient care and mobile device applications.
