vergil.u.washington.edu is the central hub of web publishing for students and student groups at the University of Washington. In addition to being a file server and access point, users can also set up MySQL database servers on vergil. (Note that direct access to your MySQL server is limited to computers on the University of Washington network.) Vergil is a single-host system, and all users will use vergil.u.washington.edu when connecting.
Activating Vergil
A student or student group must activate Web Publishing services in order to create an account for their NetID on the server.
Using Vergil
Transferring Files to and from Vergil
Opening a remote terminal on Vergil
Optional: Using Localhome
Although not required on Vergil, setting up and using localhome is recommended. The localhome feature allows a user to set the web development server as their “local” system, and enables them to connect and use a server address of netid.vergil.u.washington.edu, replacing “netid” with their own NetID.
Since the linked instructions are for ‘ovid’ server users, be sure and replace any instances of the word ‘ovid’ with ‘vergil’ during the setup.
