Be Transparent

Last updated: September 26, 2024

Overview

As one of UW’s Privacy Principles, being transparent with our constituents is a fundamental privacy practice and one of the Privacy Office’s strategic initiatives. Providing transparency means to take “…the appropriate measures to provide any information relating to processing to the data subject in a concise, intelligible, and easily accessible form, using clear and plain language.” [1]

UW units can provide transparency by providing notice and obtaining informed consent. Both are considered best practices and, in some cases, may be legally required. The Privacy Office provides guidance and templates to support units in their effort to provide transparency about their personal data processing.

Provide notice

A privacy notice offers transparency to constituents about the way(s) the UW will use, retain, share and secure any personal data they provide. Review guidance about providing notice and take advantage of our resources and template language.

Obtain informed consent

Offering constituents the opportunity to consent to personal data processing informs individuals about the purpose and use of personal data and enables them to make an educated decision about their preferences. Learn more about obtaining consent and take advantage of our resources and template language.
