About Namecoach
Namecoach lets students and instructors record and share the correct pronunciation of one’s name within Canvas, the UW’s learning management system. You can also listen to pronunciation recordings from others in your classes.
You can access Namecoach from any of your Canvas courses by selecting Namecoach in the course navigation. This page will allow you to add or update your pronunciation recording, to type out a phonetic spelling for your name, and to review pronunciation information shared by others.
Enabling correct name pronunciation supports an inclusive and equitable learning and work environment, and one in which identity and diversity, as experienced through names, are treated with respect. UW-IT is committed to providing technologies that foster an inclusive learning environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I share my name pronunciation?
- From any course in UW Canvas, select Namecoach in the course navigation. This will open the course’s Namecoach roster.
- At the top of the Namecoach page next to your name, select the Record Name button. If you have added a recording already, the button will appear as Edit your info.
- Choose an option for submitting your recording: Phone, Web Recorder, or Uploader.
- Optionally, you can also enter a phonetic spelling for your name.
- Once you have finished recording, click Submit to save the recording.
- Once you have completed your Namecoach profile, your information will appear in all other UW Canvas courses that have turned on the Namecoach menu item.
How do I update my information?
You can edit your recorded information by clicking Namecoach from the course navigation in any UW Canvas course and clicking Edit your info next to your name. Any edits will apply to your Namecoach profile across all UW Canvas courses.
How do I access information submitted by other users?
You can access the Namecoach roster in any Canvas course by selecting Namecoach in the course navigation. Below your recording pane, you will find a list of the names of all others in the class who have submitted recordings. You can browse this list directly or use the Search tool to search for the name of a particular student or instructor.
