Tableau Desktop Licensing

UW-IT’s Tableau Desktop Licensing service enables faculty, staff, and students to purchase Tableau Desktop licenses at reduced cost so that they can begin building and publishing amazing data visualizations.

There are many different options available depending on your characteristics. Please choose your role below to see the best option for your scenario.

  • Build/Develop visualizations

  • Publish visualizations for sharing

    • Product: Tableau Public Server
    • Cost: Free
    • Obtain: Publish to Tableau’s Public Server from within Tableau Public Desktop

Staff:

  • Interact with existing visualizations

    • Product: UW Tableau Server and UW Tableau Public Server
    • Cost: Free
    • Obtain: Browse the catalog of all UW Tableau Server visualizations
      (NoteUsers must have access to the EDW and to the UW Tableau Server) Visualizations published on the UW Tableau Public Server are shared by embedding them within a webpage. No special permissions are required to access the visualization.
  • Build/Develop visualizations

    • Product: Tableau Desktop
    • Cost: License Cost: $1,200; Monthly Maintenance Fee: $35. Includes Tableau support, software upgrades, online publishing to UW’s Tableau Server and UW’s Tableau Public Server.
    • Obtain: Request a License
  • Publish visualizations for sharing

    • Product: UW Tableau Server and UW Tableau Public Server
    • Cost: Included with Tableau Desktop License
    • Obtain: Included with purchase of Tableau Desktop and annual renewal fee
      • Publish to UW Tableau Server from within Tableau Desktop
      • Publish to UW’s Tableau Public Server

Faculty (teaching with Tableau):

  • Interact with existing visualizations

    • Product: UW Tableau Server and UW Tableau Public Server
    • Cost: Free
