Visual Studio – Annual Subscription
Visual Studio is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), and it is available for Windows and Mac. Visual Studio for Mac has many of the same features as Visual Studio 2019 and is optimized for developing cross-platform and mobile apps.
Licensing Details
Microsoft Visual Studio is available through an annual subscription, with the license period running from June 1 through May 31 of the next year.
- UW IT cannot prorate or refund the cost of the Visual Studio license subscription.
- Visual Studio license cannot be assigned to a shared UW NetID. Only personal NetID is eligible.
Automatic Renewal and re-assignment.
Once purchased, the license will be automatically renewed for the NEXT license subscription period. To opt-out of the NEXT licensing cycle automatic renewal please submit an Opt-Out Request
A license can be reassigned to a different employee upon request.
- Use Azure Dev. Tools for Education program for computing labs and for students and faculty – for instructional and non-commercial research purposes only.
- NOTE: Usage guidelines are strict.

The most basic edition of Visual Studio, the Community edition, is available free of charge.
UW IT provides two levels of an annual subscription for Visual Studio.
Visual Studio Professional with MSDN | $60 |
Visual Studio Enterprise with MSDN | $335 |
The licensed user can install and use Visual Studio on any number of devices.
This software can be installed and used on your devices at work, and at home. However, Visual Studio is not licensed for use in production environments.
A production environment is defined as an environment that is accessed by end-users of an application (such as an Internet Web site) and that is used for more than Acceptance Testing of that application or Feedback. Some scenarios that constitute production environments include:
• Environments that connect to a production database.
• Environments that support disaster-recovery or backup for a production environment.
• Environments that are used for production at least some of the time, such a server that is rotated into production during peak periods of activity.
Eligibility
- UW faculty and staff are eligible for this license.
- UW Affiliates not paid by the UW, visiting scholars, distance learning, and extension students are not eligible to purchase this software.
- This software is for use on computers owned or leased by the UW or on the faculty, or staff personal computer.
