Computer renames on 5/17

Computers with an underscore in their name will be renamed and restarted on 5/17. More information is available.

Migrating workstations to the NETID domain

All managed workstations will be migrated to the NETID domain between 5/22/2017 and 6/2/2017. More information on this can be found in the MWS announcement

Office 2007 End of Life (EOL)

Office 2007 support has ended. More information on this can be found in the MWS announcement sent out on 5/10/2017

Disabling SMBv1 on all Managed Workstations

Starting on April 17, 2017 we are disabling SMBv1 on all Managed Workstation computers.  See the MWS announcement for more info

Improving ways to request help

We have updated the way to request help by the use of some new request forms. More information can be found in this MWS annoucement

Windows 8.1 moves to containment

On May 1st, Windows 8.1 will be moving to containment. See more information on this in the MWS annoucement

Windows 7 moves to containment

Beginning on February 28th, 2017, Windows 7 will be moving to containment.

Windows 10 upgrades coming next week

We will begin upgrading Windows 10 computers to version 1607 start next week.

Brown bag lunch on January 30th, 2017

Join us on January 30th, 2017 from 12:00PM – 1:00PM in the Visitors Dining Room on the 4th floor of the UW Tower.

Disabling all remaining NEBULA2 accounts

Starting 11/28, all remaining NEBULA2 accounts will be disabled.

Managed Workstation service design change: Default domain

On 9/30/2016, the default login domain on managed workstations will change to NetID.

Managed Workstation service design change: DNS  search suffixes

On 9/30/2016, the service design for DNS search suffixes on managed workstations will change.

Change in printer support

Managed Workstation Services (MWS) will no longer provide printer support to our customers, to align with the University’s priorities.

Managed workstation FY17 rates now available

As of 7/1/2016 the new FY17 rates for Managed Workstation Service have been approved.

The rates are:

  • Managed Workstation rate: $34.50/desktop/month
  • Managed Workstation file storage: $.15/GB/month
  • Windows File storage: $.37/GB/month
  • Consulting Services: $98.50 per hour

On-going Problems H: and I: Drives

Update: Last month we experienced a significant incident where the server infrastructure behind H:\ and I:\groups was unable to accept new connections.

Managed Workstation H: and I:\groups troubles

On 6/15/2016, we experienced a significant incident where the server infrastructure behind H:\ and I:\groups was unable to accept new connections.

OUTAGE: H:, I:\groups, i:\snapshots

Information and a workaround solution that will be implemented for this problem are included in the MWS announcement that was sent out on 6/15/2016

Unused Nebula2 user accounts being disabled

Nebula2 accounts that have not been used in more then 37 days have been disabled.

VPN service change for Mac users

The VPN service for Mac users is being retired on 6/10/2016; Mac users are encouraged to use Husky OnNet.

Managed workstation service group management

The Managed Workstation service will no longer make group membership changes on your behalf.

What is included in the MWS rate?

New documentation exists which explains what is included in the Managed Workstation rate vs. what incurs an hourly consulting rate.

Lite Touch: Network-based OS deployment capability

The Managed Desktop service provides a network-based OS deployment capability which has been documented.

Windows 10 upgrade

The Managed Workstation service has provided an easy upgrade option from your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 computer to Windows 10 via a a self-service desktop shortcut.

Should I upgrade my computer to Windows 10?

Upgrading to Windows 10

We advise customers leave plenty of time for the upgrade to happen—the computer won’t be available during the upgrade. Consider starting the upgrade before you leave for the day.

You should reboot your computer before starting the upgrade to clear any pending updates, as pending updates could interfere with the upgrade.

Office 2016

Office 2016 is now available to install through Software Center.

Changes in accessing file services

Access is now based on eligibility groups managed by each customer. As users are added and removed from eligibility groups, access to services will be added or removed. If you are unsure or do not know what your eligibility group is, send and email to help@uw.edu.
