Ensuring a MI user is considered active

The MI Service will deactivate any NETID Active Directory account that is considered inactive. Do one of the following actions to ensure that a UW NetID account stays enabled in NETID AD.

Change the account password

An account is active if the password has been changed within the last year.

Go to to change the password.

Log on to AD

An account is active if it has had an AD logon within the last year. Either of these actions will result in an AD logon:

  • Log into a NETID AD domain-joined computer, e.g. a Managed Workstation computer or a computer joined to a delegated OU
  • Access a NETID AD protected resource such as a SQL Server or a Windows file share (note that not all campus Windows resources are protected by the MI NETID AD)

Assign an Office 365 license

Employees, students, and UW Workforce members automatically get an Office 365 license.

Shared and sponsored/affiliate UW NetIDs can be licensed to use Office 365 if there is a legitimate business need. See the following locations for what actions to take, if appropriate:

Add the account to an exception group

Each NETID delegated OU has a group that is used to list accounts that should be considered active even if they don’t satisfy the other criteria. These groups have a name of the form u_msinf_delou_<ou-name>_accountsthatdonotlogin.
