  • 20160422: Rename: UW Windows Infrastructure -> Microsoft Infrastructure

    May 16, 2016

What and When: Over the next month or so, we’ll be updating our references to UW Windows Infrastructure (and UWWI) to Microsoft Infrastructure. You will see documentation and mailing lists like this one be updated to reflect this name change. We will likely also update our name in more obscure places, e.g. we are considering a change to our Groups Service stem.   What You Need to Do: Nothing. This is an advisory note to keep you informed so you…

  • Microsoft Infrastructure documentation migration/consolidation

    April 28, 2016

We’re combining our documentation into IT Connect. A few exceptions that don’t work well on that platform will remain in the UW-IT Wiki.   What and When: Over the next several weeks, we will be migrating the Microsoft Infrastructure documentation into IT Connect (https://itconnect.uw.edu). Our documentation will live under https://itconnect.uw.edu/wares/msinf/.   Our content has been splattered across multiple locations, including a web hosting platform we run for ourselves. It doesn’t make sense for us to run something separate, and consolidating…

  • 2016 January

    January 16, 2016

Here’s our semi-annual newsletter update on recent happenings with the UW Windows Infrastructure.   ==== New Capabilities and Improvements ====   * Self-service certificates for Delegated OUs. An AD-integrated certificate authority (AD Certificate Services) has been deployed. This allows Windows domain joined computers to automatically get a certificate which is automatically renewed. See https://wiki.cac.washington.edu/x/_69NB for more details.   * Azure Active Directory (AD) External User Invitations. Invitations to users outside the UW can be initiated by anyone with a UW…

  • RE: Network Incident -> Groups Incident -> UWWI incident

    September 25, 2015

As of last night ~10:30pm, we believe that all affected groups have been brought into synchronization. If you have a group which you feel isn’t synchronized, please do let us know.   Brian

  • Network Incident -> Groups Incident -> UWWI incident

    September 23, 2015

Some UWWI groups are not currently in complete sync with the Groups Service   What and When: This past weekend there was a significant network incident. That led to a Groups Service incident. The impact of the Groups Service incident was that change notifications for groups changed during that part of the weekend were never sent to UWWI.   UWWI also had an incident because of the network incident and had to restart our group agent, but that only delayed…

  • Entra ID External User invitations enabled

    August 18, 2015

The UW Windows Infrastructure has enabled External User invitations in our enterprise Entra ID.   What and When: Entra ID External User invitations can now be initiated by any user in our enterprise Entra ID, i.e. anyone with a UW NetID. This enables the possibility of collaborative sharing with non-UW identities for those applications which rely on Entra ID for identity.   What You Need to Do: No action is required, but if you run an application that relies on…

  • Entra ID device join

    July 30, 2015

The UW Windows Infrastructure has limited who can join devices to our enterprise Entra ID . This capability is more broadly possible with the release of Windows 10.   What and When: The UWWI service is following the decision/guidance of the Entra ID governance team, put into place by the UW Enterprise Architecture program. Many thanks to the sage advice of that team.   Entra ID device join has been put into a limited, exploratory stage. It changed from the…

  • 2015 July

    July 16, 2015

Here’s our semi-annual newsletter update on recent happenings with the UW Windows Infrastructure.   ==== New Capabilities and Improvements ====   * Self-service SPNs for Application UW NetIDs. This allows an application UW NetID to set its own SPN values, just as a gMSA can, and like an OU admin can for a computer object. See https://wiki.cac.washington.edu/display/UWWI/Delegated+Service+Principal+Name+values for more details.   * Domain based DFS replication is now supported. This allows replication of file content across non-clustered Windows file servers….

  • 2015 January

    January 16, 2015

Here’s our semi-annual newsletter update on recent happenings with the UW Windows Infrastructure.   ==== New Capabilities and Improvements ====   * Unix, Linux, and Mac Integration with UWWI Active Directory. Many customers already join their Macs, and some join their Unix computers to the NETID domain. We removed obstacles to using PowerBroker Enterprise or Open in the NETID domain, and put documentation together to help guide customers who would like these benefits but don’t know how. See https://wiki.cac.washington.edu/x/nCwJB for…
