Add Long Response Questions

Service notice: All Catalyst Web Tools–except WebQ Survey and Gradebook–will be retired. View timeline and details.

WebQ allows you to easily create long response questions for your survey or quizzes. A long response allows participants to enter or paste a large amount of text as a response. This is a good type of question when you want to ask open-ended or essay style questions.

Add a Long Response Question to Your Survey or Quiz

Follow these steps to add a question to your survey or quiz:

  1. StepsActions
  2. From the “Build Survey” or “Build Quiz” page, select “Long response” from the “Add item” drop-down menu.
  3. If you have already added a question to the survey or quiz, you can select the position at which you want to add the content, and then click Add. You will move to the “Add Long Response Question” page.
  4. Enter or copy and paste the text of your question into the space provided. Click and drag to highlight text, and then use the toolbar to format the text as you would like it to appear on your published survey or quiz. You can also add section dividers (horizontal rules), insert images, and create links with the toolbar. View detailed instructions for using the text editor.

Choose Settings

You have the option of choosing question settings to customize the appearance of your question and limit the type of response a participant can submit. If you do not choose any settings, no text will be displayed initially in the answer box, the answer box will be 60 characters wide and five lines tall, and the response will not be limited. Below are descriptions of the settings you can select:

Require a response to this question: Participants will not be able to submit the survey or quiz unless they respond to this question.

Answer box width and height: You can change the dimensions of the answer box by entering numbers in the spaces provided.

Text to display initially in the answer box:
Enter some text that you would like to be displayed initially in the answer box. For example, this text might prompt the participant to enter a response, show the appropriate format for the response, or provide a sample response.

Limit response to ### characters: Select this option to limit the number of characters a participant can enter in their response. Enter the number of characters to which you want to limit responses in the space provided.

Tip: If participants attempt to submit a response which goes over the character limit, they will be notified and given a chance to change their response.

Set Quiz Features

If you are building a quiz, you have the option of providing feedback to students. You can choose when (and if) participants are shown the feedback by modifying the participant experience settings.

WebQ can display feedback about a question to participants after they submit their response(s). You can create feedback for this question by entering or pasting text into the space provided under step 3 “Add feedback text”.
