# Convert Scores to Class Grades

This document explains the purpose of class grades and how they are converted, and provides step-by-step instructions for grade conversion (scroll down to view).

The “class grade” column can be used to communicate a student’s final grade for the class.
The class grade will also automatically transfer to the online Faculty Grade Report during the grade submission process.

You can either assign class grades by entering or importing values, or define how students’ total scores should be converted to class grades by creating a conversion table. The conversion table can be created manually or by using the conversion calculator.

## How Does the Conversion Calculator Work?

The conversion calculator lets you define two or more points on your grading scale, and then completes the rest of the scale for you. Linear interpolation, a mathematical method for determining values on a straight line between two known points, is used to fill in the grading scale between the points you enter. Remember, the two points you define represent the low end of the range for their respective class grades.

To create a simple linear scale, enter the minimum score for the highest grade, and the minimum score for the lowest grade receiving credit into the calculator. Here are example values for an undergraduate grade point scale: You can also refine the scale by adding rows and entering points in between these values.
