Using RSS in Your Workspace

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.

RSS is a format that allows web sites to publish a notification when their content is updated. The notification contains a link to the updated page, article, or blog post, and some or all of the updated content. Many web sites including blogs, newspapers, journals, libraries, search engines, university alert systems, and social networking sites now provide RSS feeds for their frequently-updated content. Adding an RSS feed to your CommonView workspace allows these Web sites to automatically post new content, such as a news article or a blog post, to the workspace.

Using RSS Feeds in Your CommonView Workspace

Here are some examples of how workspaces with different goals might use RSS feeds.

Departmental Intranet:

  • New journal articles matching relevant keywords or published by relevant journals
  • Photos of departmental events from the department’s Flickr account
  • New press releases from the department
  • UW building alerts


Interactive class web site:

  • All tweets matching a specific Twitter tag (“hash tag”), posted by instructor, students, or others in the field
  • New journal articles matching relevant keywords
  • Student blog posts
  • Announcements posted on a dedicated Twitter account


Research team:

  • New journal articles matching relevant keywords
  • Links shared by the team via Delicious
  • New research-related images shared to the team on Flickr
  • All tweets matching a specific Twitter tag (“hash tag”) or posted by a dedicated Twitter account
