MediaAMP Media Manager for Canvas FAQ
The MediaAMP Media Manager for Canvas (MMC) provides UW instructors who use the Canvas learning management system another option for integrating audio and video content into their teaching. This solution works well for people with existing media collections as well as for those who record content with Panopto, Camtasia, Mediasite and many other systems.
Why Use the MediaAMP Media Manager for Canvas?
MediaAMP’s Media Manager for Canvas (MMC) allows Canvas course instructors to upload, manage and search a wider range of video and audio file types with their Canvas courses than is possible with either UW Panopto or the Canvas media tool. If you have video and audio content that you’ve created using software other than Panopto, the MMC lets you use that content in your Canvas course without having to convert it via the integrated Canvas media tool, which many times provides poor results. How do I add the MMC to my course?
UW-IT will add the MMC to your Canvas courses. For more information, send a message to email@example.com. We will need the course names, course URLs or course IDs .
How do I access the MMC?
Once your MediaAMP account has been connected to your Canvas course, a MediaAMP link will appear in the Canvas course navigation. To go to your media collection, click the MediaAMP link.
Why is there no content in my media collection?
The media collection will show only content that has your Canvas ID (or your institutional ID) attached to it. If you have not uploaded any media using the MediaAMP Tool, the content section will be empty.
How do I add/upload media to a course using the MMC?

Does MediaAMP support audio-only files?
Yes, MediaAMP supports files without video. Such files can be uploaded and played like any other file.
What file types are supported by the MMC?
MediaAMP supports the following file extensions:
What is the recommended video aspect ratio?
The recommended aspect ratio for videos is 16:9 with dimensions not exceeding 1920 x 1080. The following aspect ratios and dimensions are suggested:

Are there file size limits?
No, there are no size limits on files uploaded to MediaAMP. However, some browsers may experience poor upload results with larger file sizes. MediaAMP recommends file bitrates between 6 – 18 Mbps (Megabits per second) which equates roughly to file sizes of 45 – 135 MB (Megabytes) per minute of video.
How long does it typically take to process media once it has finished uploading?
The upload process requires varying amounts of time depending on the format and size of the media, as well as how many other people are uploading media at the same time. Larger and longer videos will take more time than short videos and most audio-only files. A general rule of thumb is to expect processing to take about the same time as the duration of the media; in most cases it will be quicker. If your media is still processing after the expected duration, contact support at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What should I do if an error occurs during upload or processing?
If an upload fails due to an error while uploading or an error occurs during media processing, try uploading the media again. If the problem persists, contact email@example.com.
Metadata and Searching
How do I add metadata to MediaAMP content?
Information about your media content, or metadata, is useful for organizing and searching as your collection grows. Metadata can be applied to individual media by clicking the Edit button next to the title of the media you wish to edit and filling in the fields that appear. Basic metadata fields that come standard with the tool are:
- Title (required, the default value is the original filename of the uploaded media)
- Keywords (tags that can help organize content and that can be used in searches)
- Administrators (see User Management for more information on this field)

How do I search for media?
To search for media, on the “Your Content” page, in the upper right, go to the Search your media field and enter your search request.
You can search content against any metadata attached to a media object. Title, Description and Keywords are all searchable categories and the word or group of words placed in the search field are highlighted in the objects that show up in the search.

How can I narrow my search?
To narrow a search, click the Title, Description or Keyword categories that appear once a search has been conducted. This will show only items that have the search query in the category you have selected. For example, searching for “physics” will reveal all media that have “physics” in the title, description or keyword fields. Select the Keyword category to show only those items with “physics” in the keyword field.
Use the keyword “AND” between two terms to return search results that match both of those terms. Use the keyword “OR” to return search results that show either of those terms. Enclose multiple words in double-quotes (“) to search for an exact phrase.
Who can upload media to MediaAMP?
Instructors, TAs and Course Designers can upload and manage content using the MMC. Uploaded content can be seen only by those who have been added as content administrators and is not available for general viewing until it has been embedded into a course page (for information on embedding media, see the Content Management section of this FAQ).
How do I allow other people to manage my media?
To add a content administrator for a single video or audio:
- Find the media you want to edit permissions for.
- On the media, click Edit.
- In the Administrators field, enter the Canvas IDs (Usually the authorization ID of your institution, e.g. UW NetID), separated by commas.
- Click Save changes.
If you need to add administrators to a large number of media items, contact your organization’s MediaAMP administrator.
How do I embed MediaAMP media into a page for general viewing access?
Embedding media from your MediaAMP collection into a course page is available from anywhere in the course that utilizes the Canvas Rich Text Editor (RTE) tool. These areas include but aren’t limited to:
