Deactivate UW Deskmail, UW Gmail (G Suite)

Some UW email services, including UW Deskmail and UW Gmail (G Suite) may be manually deactivated by the account holder.

UW Exchange Online (Office 365), and Outlook Live can only be deactivated via automated expiration processes.

Deactivate UW Deskmail

Are you paying for extra storage on Deskmail? Stop payment before deactivating your account.

1. Check for content you want to save

  1. Go to Web Alpine (Deskmail).
  2. In the upper right corner of the page, click Open UW NetID’s Inbox.
  3. On the left side of the next screen, click View/Manage folders.
  4. Open folders and review content. Decide whether you want to move a few items, move a few folders, or move all your content (Windows)  (Mac users).

2. Move email from Deskmail to another email service

If you do not need to migrate any email, skip to Deactivate your Deskmail account

  • Current UW Faculty, Staff, Students, and Emeriti Faculty and Emeriti Librarians may migrate Deskmail email to either UW Exchange Online or UW Gmail
  • Alumni, Retirees, and Former Staff and Students may migrate de minimis personal email to a private email service

3. Deactivate Deskmail account

Once you have determined that you do not need your old email, or have successfully migrated it to your current mailbox, deactivate Deskmail mailbox by doing the following:

  1. Navigate to the UW NetID Manage Portal (make sure that the Computing Services tab is selected)
  2. Check UW Deskmail Email Account.
  3. Then click Unsubscribe.

Deactivate UW Gmail (G Suite) service

1. Check for content you want to save

  1. Navigate to your UW Gmail inbox.
  2. In the left navigation pane, click a folder name to view a list of messages in the folder

2. Move mail from UW Gmail to another email service

If you do not need to migrate any email, skip to step 3.

Alumni, retirees, and former staff and students may migrate de minimis personal email to a private email service.

3. Deactivate UW Gmail (G Suite) account

Once you have determined that you do not need your email, or have successfully migrated it to your current mailbox you can deactivate UW Gmail and G Suite.

  1. Navigate to the UW NetID Manage Portal: https://uwnetid.washington.edu/manage/?google (make sure that the UW G Suite tab is selected)
  2. In the UW G Suite Account Information section, next to Account Status, click Turn Off.
