At-sea students and researchers stay connected with VoIP telephones
University students and researchers at sea off the coast of Oregon for more than four weeks this summer will be too far from cell towers to use a mobile phone. Instead, they will rely on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephones configured with secure firewall by UW-IT to make and receive phone calls. The VoIP phones connect to the Internet through a satellite network link available to research ships. The summer Interactive Oceans research cruise will be on the R/V Revelle; the UW’s research vessel R/V Thompson is dry-docked for maintenance.
