EDW 101

UW’s Enterprise Data Warehouse contains a wealth of information from across the University, including data from academic, finance, human resources, and research subject areas. A variety of tools exist to help you use EDW data to better analyze and understand your business and make data-informed decisions. In this session we introduce you to UW’s Enterprise Data Warehouse, present available data and tools, and discuss how to get started.

Workshop Objectives
After completing this webinar you will be able to:

  • Understand the role of the EDW at the University of Washington
  • Learn how to get access to EDW data and tools
  • Understand what tools are available to work with EDW data
  • Understand how to connect to data, reports, cubes and visualizations

Handling Data 101

While you may not have intended to become a data analyst, you are now in a position where you want to use and analyze data to be successful. If you want to see trends and patterns at a glance, this workshop is for you. In two hours, learn how to take control of your data and analyses to answer business questions and make decisions. We will teach basic Microsoft Excel PivotTable skills and you will see how thousands of pieces of information swing into place.

NOTE: The focus of this workshop is beginning Microsoft Excel PivotTable skills. We use EDW report and cube data in some of our exercises but we do not address using EDW data to answer specific business questions.

Workshop Objectives
After completing this workshop you’ll be able to:

  • Slice and dice data with Microsoft Excel PivotTables with basic data
  • Download data from an EDW report and create a PivotTable to answer questions using that data
  • Connect to an EDW data cube and use a PivotTable to answer questions using that data

Tableau Basics 101

Tableau is used to visualize data sets and helps simplify their meaning, promote understanding of those data sets, and communicate important concepts and ideas. This three-hour hands-on workshop is designed for the beginner Tableau user. This course will help you understand and apply basic concepts and techniques in Tableau.

  • Tour of Tableau Desktop
  • Understand Tableau terminology
  • Create basic visualizations, including:
    • Bar Chart
    • Cross Tab
    • Geographic Map
    • Tree Map

UW Profiles Workshop

UW Profiles is a web-based institutional dashboard powered by Tableau Software. It is designed to provide University decision-makers with a dynamic way to access, explore, and understand basic University data. UW Profiles makes it easy to search and aggregate data at any level of the organization.

Introduce your team to UW Profiles through a customized demonstration or hands-on workshop in your offices. Staff from UW-IT and the Office of Planning and Budgeting will show your group to use these online dashboards and get the most out of UW Profiles.
