Interactive UW data dashboards enable prospective students, higher education institutions and the general public to explore UW enrollment and degree trends, and undergraduate graduation and retention rates. Called Public Profiles, it was developed by the Office of Planning & Budgeting and was released this summer. More extensive UW data dashboards, UW Profiles, have been available to the UW community since fall 2013.

Tableau Project Owners are now able to self-manage who has access to your visualizations. Using free UW Active Directory (AD) Groups, you can assign people directly to the publisher, editor and viewer security roles within your Tableau projects.
- Queries to the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) will be faster and simpler
- Users will have upgraded SQL databases with new SQL tools
- A single server location for all EDW data eliminates the need for cross-server joins
- Geographical redundancy of critical data provides business continuity and disaster preparedness

The EDW technology refresh is part of a wider effort to simplify infrastructure management for UW-IT, as all data and Web servers move into the UW NetID domain. These ongoing enhancements reflect UW-IT’s goal to provide access to excellent infrastructure for the University, as outlined in UW-IT’s 2014 Strategic Investment Plan.
We are pleased to announce the latest release of UW’s Business Intelligence (BI) Portal. With the addition of data visualizations, the BI Portal is now positioned to be your one stop catalog for all central reports and analytics using Enterprise Data Warehouse data as well as departmental analytics from around the University.
Additional features in this release include:
- Links to a growing repository of Knowledge Base articles on new EDW data releases are available under the Glossary tab
- A more granular Alerts system tells you if there are issues with the individual reports, cubes, and visualizations
- Several other enhancements that improve tablet users’ experience
Tableau 8.2, released June 19, is the first version of this easy-to-use data analysis visualization tool to run natively on the Mac. It provides faster loading and new map designs and supports high resolution images, letting you display large data sets and communicate information in a powerful way. License agreements make Tableau products available at reduced or no cost to full-time UW students, as well as faculty and staff.
UW’s choice to use Tableau software as its primary data visualization tool, and the development of UW Profiles dashboards for exploring and understanding basic University data was reported in a recent issue of the Wall Street Journal. Tableau is used to easily create interactive graphics, reports and dashboards that allow you to ask questions and see and understand data in meaningful ways. To develop UW Profiles, UW-IT partnered with the Office of Planning and Budgeting. UW Profiles and Tableau also were featured in the November 2013 Special Edition of UW-IT Insights.
In January, UW-IT’s Enterprise Data & Analytics team began a partnership with three iSchool graduate students. The goal: to envision, design, and build a new, user-focused website to inform readers about UW’s data and analytics resources.
Shih-Hao Chiu, Chia-Ching Liu, and Christine Lin, along with our iSchool student employee, Rui Zhang, worked side by side with our team to develop the new site in 4 short months. Early and intensive education sessions helped the students understand our mission and value to the University. They pored over our old site, and then quickly mocked up a cleaner navigation structure and an attractive design. Using agile methodology, we developed iteratively, and managed scope as needed to complete the site in time for their June graduation.
The new site moves away from a text-based format, using images and short narrative to guide readers to content of interest. Those interested in self-service can quickly find the reporting and data analysis tools available. Business Intelligence developers are supported as well with detailed instructional information designed to enhance productivity. Regarded as a national leader in warehousing and business intelligence, the website also features content for external parties interested in learning about our best practices. The new site contains many other features, including the ability to subscribe to news and alerts, a graphical timeline chronicling the history of the warehousing and business intelligence at UW, online registration for training and community events, links to videos, and more.
A hearty congratulations to our four iSchool Capstone students! Through many real-world experiences, they have helped produce a world-class site for higher education data & analytics.

Canfield-Budde has been elected president of HEDW for a second term, the first time in the organization’s 11-year history that a previous president was asked to serve again.
UW-IT, in partnership with the Office of Planning & Budgeting and the Office of the Registrar, is pleased to announce that a new data resource for Classification of Instructional Programming (CIP) has been released.
This new data table will allow you to compare the UW with other institutions in the delivery of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and high demand programs.
For the first time, you will be able to classify your curriculum and majors by Federal or State STEM, National Science Foundation STEM, and Washington State high demand programs via a consistent, centrally available data source.
