Directory Services

Service Description

Directory Services provide high-availability, read-only LDAP interfaces to well-managed information based on UW NetIDs, including basic identifiers, affiliations, and group memberships provisioned from UW systems of record (e.g., HEPPS, SDB, Advance, Person Registry, Groups service).

Note: Use of this service is under containment status, meaning other services are recommended for new customers. Refer to the Additional Information below for alternatives.

Service Options

Directory Services options include:

  • UWWI Active Directory - Provides LDAP directory services including user accounts for all UW NetIDs and group data from the UW Groups service; part of UW Windows Infrastructure (UWWI), this service option is particularly relevant to customers seeking integration with the Windows platform. Note: Use of this service option for LDAP based authentication, authorization, and directory services for application integration is under containment status.
  • Person Directory Service (PDS) - Provides an LDAP interface to common UW identifiers and affiliation data for all UW members and affiliates; additional contact data is available for employees, students, and alumni; data is searchable by official UW identifiers (e.g. UW NetID, UW Registry ID, Student ID, Employee ID). Note: Use of this service option is under containment status.
  • Groups Directory Service (GDS) - Provides an LDAP interface to group data managed in the UW Groups service. Note: Use of this service option is under containment status.

Service Level Description

Uptime: Continuous, all days and hours. Service issues will be addressed based on priority and resource availability.

Additional Information

Customers seeking to integrate applications with Directory Services should consider other baseline services.

For enterprise level business data, Enterprise Web Services and Events is an alternative to LDAP to PDS and UWWI AD.

For programmatic access to UW groups data, Access Management includes a Groups REST API as an alternative to LDAP to GDS.

For user authentication, Authentication Services provide alternatives to LDAP authentication via UWWI AD.
